Hydraulic cooling helps this lumber Jack stay productive

Simplex has introduced the TJH2 self-contained, load-return hydraulic toe jack. Said to be capable of furnishing up to two tons of lifting capacity, the jack features a low, back-saving handle effort and less than one-inch minimal toe height.
Each PF jack is actually a system comprising several basic components: either a hand or air-powered hydraulic pump; a hydraulic hose; a quick connect coupler; and a ram. Pumps are at the heart of each system, and Porter-Ferguson offers three: an air-operated hydraulic pump, the PF1000; and two hand hydraulic pumps, the SM0033 Speed Midget pump and the BU0483 Hydro-Chief pump.
 Because of its advanced diesel engine, the logstacker meets Canadian emissions requirements, but a side effect of the low emissions engine technology is an increase in heat rejection. "Designing the cooling system for this logstacker was definitely a challenge," noted Jonathan Eckart, an Allied mechanical engineer who teamed with engineers from Hyda-Power Systems, Portland, Ore., and L&M Radiator, Hibbing, Minn., on the cooling system design. "Fortunately, the customer already was sold on the hydraulic cooling concept when they placed the order so we did not have to convince them that was the best solution."

While not an entirely new concept, hydraulic cooling systems are finding greater application because of the increasing thermal loads and the generally smaller and more crowded engine compartments.

 "As it turned out, we left the engine and charge-air 'cooling packs' in the conventional position, even though we had the freedom to locate in multiple locations. But the hydraulic cooling approach did make it very easy to move the transmission cooler from the front of the vehicle to the rear to satisfy a customer preference."

Another advantage the hydraulic fan system provided concerned maintenance, as the reversing capability of the system allows the radiators to be purged by reversing the airflow. "That capability is very important in the summer when mud turns to dust that quickly clogs a radiator,www.cnc-machining.cn" said Keagbine. "We mounted a switch on the operator's console that lets the driver reverse fan direction any time the radiators start to clog up. We chose not to make this an automatic function because it simply isn't needed most of the year, only during the relatively short summer in that part of British Columbia.
